Welcome to the Breast Cancer Support Board.
This site is run for all those affected by breast cancer and is run by women who have fought or are fighting the disease. We are one large family and we love having new members so please do join us by posting a message. We are spread over the country with different diagnoses and having different treatments, so between us we have a wealth of first hand experience to share with you.
We offer support, practical advice and laughter but we are not professionals and if you are at all worried about any aspect of your illness please consult your GP/hospital /breast care nurse without delay.
If you're interested in how this board was created, please see this page.
Profiles
To begin, register your name and fill in some details of your profile so that we can learn a little about you. Please do not enter any personal contact details such as addresses, phone numbers or personal email. Any categories which you do not fill in will be omitted from your profile. However you can update your profile at any time you wish.
To learn about your fellow board members, click on the name below any of the messages and that person's profile will appear. If you use the search facility then offered below the profile you are able search for all messages posted by a particular member, beginning with their most recent post.
To post a message
Before posting a message, please read our etiquette page first.
Click on 'post new message' and a box will appear for you to write the title of your message (which will appear on the board) and another for you to write the content of your message in. Then choose an icon you consider relevant to go with your message from the drop down list. By clicking on preview you are able to see how your message will appear to others and what the icon will look like. Then click on post and your message will be posted to the board.
You can read other peoples messages by clicking on the title of the message. Although messages are often directed at particular members, they are there for everyone to read and comment on. You can reply to any message by clicking on 'reply to this message' which will appear when you read a post. Your reply will appear directly under the post to which you have replied.
If you would like to know what the icons already posted with current message represent, put your mouse pointer over the icon on the board and a line of text will appear giving the name of the icon.
As the board moves fairly quickly it may be helpful to write down the number of your message so that you can find it again when you log back in. There are 40 threads on each page and at the bottom of each page you can click on next page to view the 40 previous threads and so on.
Searching the site
If you are interested a particular subject or treatment, for example, 'taxol 'or 'cold caps' then click on the search facility which you will find at the bottom of each page and enter the subject that you are searching for. This will then bring up messages which contain references to the subject you are interested in, with the most recently posted first.
Unfortunately the search facility does not currently support searches for three letter words but we are hoping to update this in the future.
Other boards
Obviously this site will not suit everybody and there are other sites out there in cyberspace that you may wish to look at. Some of them are:-
www.breastcancercare.org.uk/Chat/Forums These are the forums developed by Breast Cancer Care (U.K. organisation) which cover all areas from diagnosis, treatment, aftercare to general chat. You can also access all other areas of Breast Cancer Care's website.
www.ivillage.co.uk This is a very large site which has many different areas of life which affect women. On the home page there is a link to the Health section. The Health section of the message boards has a forum for people affected by breast cancer.
www.bcsupport.org This is an American site but is very supportive and informative, there are two doctors who have had breast cancer themselves who post regularly and are always willing to give help where they can. Many European (British) people use this site too.
www.youngsurvival.org This is also an American site but focuses on the different problems faced by very young women when they have been given a diagnosis of breast cancer. Strongly concerned with advocacy issues and the ideal of informed choice in treatment and care.
www.Susanlovemd.com This American website is by renowned Breast surgeon Dr Susan Love who has written many books and research papers. Always has up to date/cutting edge information.
