Pond maintenance
by Rosi, 3 months ago.

Since coming home from hospital my garden pond has kept me busy. First of all a baby starling got stuck in the pondweed. I thought he was dead at first but then saw him blink, so I put on a glove and carefully lifted him out. His feet were tangled up with weed and roots so I had to gently pull all that stuff away from his feet and legs. I found a quiet spot in the garden where he was safe from predators and left him to dry out. About half an hour later he had hopped into a tree and not long after that his family came back for him! It was great to see them all chirping away together!
Next drama was after a heavy rain shower, all the frogs went mad trying to get out of the pond. They seem to dislike heavy rain when they're in the water. Because the water level had dropped, they couldn't climb out, so I built some ramps for them with flower pots and bricks! Now they have some way of getting out when the showers come!
I think I'm lucky to have all this wildlife in my garden if if they do take some looking after!
